Foreign Language Learning Tip #11: What to Do When You’re Stuck- Part 1?

What to do when you’ve bought all the grammar books, made cool flashcards to help you with your least favourite parts in studying, but still you feel that you have no idea where all this is leading to and to become fluent is just impossible? Well, today at Mr. Class we’re breaking the pattern of getting stuck by few simple hacks that can save your day!

Before we start about how to not getting stuck, you need to realise that your level of fluency can be greater or lesser than others so it’s befooling yourself if you are taking someone else’s fluency as your standard. Set your own standards for yourself depending on your efficiency and requirements. But, if you feel that you need a standard that can both help you keep better as well as give the kick you’re looking for, then I will suggest that you keep the natives of the same language as your parameter. In that way, you will be benefitted both ways.

Secondly, you also need to analyse your true purpose of learning the language. Maybe it’s for getting a more rewarding job or for settling in, but unless you have an emotional and financial connect to learn a new language you’ll always have a missing spot even if achieve outstanding fluency. What to do then you ask? Let’s start with an example, suppose you’ve enrolled yourself in some Spanish speaking classes in Bhubaneswar as your dream job in the company is looking for people fluent in Spanish. Even though the purpose is quite strong, but why don’t you make it even stronger by realising that because of your job you need to make friends and acquaintances with natives of Spain and hence make new friends who can’t speak English. Now, that as a purpose can make learning new things easier for you, which brings us to the very first step to do when you’re feeling stuck.

STEP-1: GOING BACK TO THE BASICS:

Maybe now is the time when you’ve to re-assess the very sole reason why you chose to learn a new language. Writing down the reasons along with its purpose, side-by-side always does the trick. We have some questions, we believe might help you with, but remember it is not the questions that help but the time investment to these questions make you realise it better.

·        Why did I first decide to learn this language? Have any of the reasons changed?
·        What is it going to fetch me if I become fluent with the language? Am I happy with my fluency level as of now?
·        How am I feeling with my learning experience? Is this worth it?

STEP-2: FOCUSSING ON IMPORTANT THINGS:

Sometimes going by the age-old techniques in studying or going strictly by the curriculum can make your brain come to stagnation as the new information needs newer ways and techniques to process. You need to re-evaluate if your grammar book is any more helpful to you now or is it because of the test results that you’re feeling too much laid back? If memorizing things is the problem it can be sorted by remembering a few phrases. For example you’re given a task to write down a narration in your German Speaking Classes in Bhubaneswar, you can start with phrases like:

·        “The other day as I walked down the aisle…”
·        “You know what happened next?”
·        “For a moment I couldn’t believe it was happening to me!”
·        “Have you heard what happened the other day?”

Well, here were the first two steps you need to do when you’re feeling stuck. We’ll be back with the remaining of the steps in our next blog. For more such interesting stuff, visit us at Mr. Class, Bhubaneswar.
