Learning a new language is never accessible. It takes
a lot of time and effort and the right environment to truly accomplish. German
is a peculiar language and learning it could get a little tricky. So, today
here at Mr. Class, a language learning class in Bhubaneswar, we talk about learning German through films.
Movies are fun and can refresh your mind when you are
not in a mood to do anything taxing. But, to learn a language, watching movies
is just not enough. You need to immerse yourself in its vocabulary. If you hear
something unfamiliar, keep it noted.
Best thing about learning through watching movies is
that you develop an ear for the language.

Lola Rennt (Run
Lola Run):
It’s about a girl who has to run some certain miles, or else her
boyfriend will die. It will take you on a roller coaster ride!
TIP: This film caters to the youth; you will find lots of informal
language and expressions to season your German.
2. Ostwind – Zusammen Sind WirFrei (Eastwind
– Together We Are Free):
A touching family drama where the
bond of friendship between a girl and horse is showcased.
TIP: To learn German from a
child’s perspective. Has very useful vocabulary.
3. Good Bye Lenin!
It’s a comedy film based on a
mother and son duo. The mother awakes from a coma and finds everything different
around her. To keep her from having another heart attack the son has to make
sure she has no idea about the changes around her.
TIP: Vocabulary on political
ideology. Informal words for conversation.
4. The Lives Of Others (Das Leben der
Anderen) :
It’s a political thriller. It’s
about a captain spying on a playwright. The backdrop is communist East Germany.
TIP: Exposes to varied German
accents. Since, it’s a very popular film, makes a good conversation starter.
5. Nirgendwo in Afrika (Nowhere in
Africa) :
It is a historical film. Takes
place during the World War II. It shows the varied human emotions during a war
scenario. The immigrants and their problems, the locals and their resistance
and love among people.
TIP: Clear and epigrammatic manner
of speaking which will make it a easy movie to see without subtitles.
